A Rare and Opulent Masterpiece of Double Dark Violet
The Wisteria 'Black Dragon' is a legendary variety, widely considered one of the most beautiful and unique of all Wisterias. Much like the decorative 'Minuet', it brings an air of drama and elegance to any garden structure. What sets the 'Black Dragon' apart is its spectacular double flowers; each blossom is packed with extra petals, giving the pendulous racemes a thick, ruffled, and incredibly lush appearance in a deep, dark violet-purple hue.
This vigorous Japanese climber is a reliable performer, twining gracefully in a clockwise direction. Its flower clusters reach up to 30-40cm in length and are intensely fragrant, filling the spring air with a sweet, heavy perfume. Because the flowers are "double," they have a substantial, jewel-like quality that looks magnificent when hanging from a height. As the seasons change, the fresh green foliage provides a dense canopy, eventually turning a golden yellow in the autumn.

At The Rose Press Garden, we love 'Black Dragon' for its sheer opulence. Most Wisterias are single-petalled, but the "double" nature of this variety makes it feel incredibly rare and special. From a distance, it looks like heavy braids of dark velvet; up close, the intricate layers of petals and the intensity of the purple are simply breathtaking.
