Ficus Elastica Abidjan – Dramatic Burgundy Foliage for Contemporary Interiors

Introduce a rich, dramatic botanical accent to your indoor surroundings with Ficus elastica 'Abidjan', an impressive evergreen houseplant recognised for its broad, glossy leaves and distinctive dark colouring. Commonly known as the Burgundy Rubber Plant, this striking tropical variety displays a sophisticated combination of deep green, burgundy and almost black foliage, complemented by reddish-brown leaf undersides. Its bold appearance and naturally upright growth create a statement feature for contemporary living rooms, offices, bright conservatories and thoughtfully arranged indoor plant collections.

The Abidjan Rubber Plant is particularly admired for its thick, leathery foliage and elegant architectural form. Each substantial leaf develops a smooth, polished surface that reflects natural light, while the deep burgundy tones introduce warmth and contrast to interior spaces. Unlike lighter green houseplants, this distinctive Ficus offers a darker colour palette that pairs especially well with neutral décor, modern furniture and minimalist surroundings. Preferring bright, indirect sunlight and consistently warm conditions, it is relatively straightforward to maintain when provided with suitable watering and well-drained compost. Available in a 5L nursery pot or with a decorative stoneware container, this evergreen plant offers a versatile way to introduce lasting tropical character into your home or workplace.

PLANT CARE GUIDE

Light: Position your Ficus elastica 'Abidjan' in a bright indoor location with plenty of indirect natural sunlight. Adequate filtered light helps maintain healthy foliage and its characteristic dark colouring. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh midday sunshine.

Watering: Water when the upper layer of compost begins to feel dry. Maintain moderate moisture levels without allowing the growing medium to remain constantly wet.

Temperature: Keep the plant in a warm, stable indoor environment. Protect it from cold draughts, sudden temperature changes and direct exposure to strong heating sources.

Compost: Use a well-draining houseplant compost that allows excess water to escape freely and provides suitable aeration around the roots.

Drainage: Ensure the nursery pot drains properly after watering. If using a decorative stoneware container, check that excess water does not collect around the base of the plant.

Humidity: Normal to moderate household humidity is generally suitable, although avoiding excessively dry indoor conditions can help maintain healthy leaves.

Feeding: Apply a diluted, balanced houseplant fertiliser occasionally during spring and summer to support healthy foliage and stem development.

Pruning: Remove damaged or yellowing leaves when necessary. Light pruning can help manage the plant's shape as it develops.

Foliage Maintenance: Gently wipe the broad, glossy leaves with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and preserve their naturally polished appearance.

Pet Safety: Ficus elastica contains irritating latex sap and can be harmful if chewed or ingested by cats and dogs. Keep the plant out of reach of pets and young children, and avoid contact with the sap when pruning.
