Prunus ‘Okame’ Tree – Early Flowering Cherry
Prunus ‘Okame’ is one of the earliest flowering cherries, bursting into bloom in March with a cloud of single, deep pink flowers held on bare branches. Its upright, rounded crown is perfect for smaller gardens, providing vibrant colour when little else is in flower. The fresh green foliage follows the blossom, later turning to shades of orange and red in autumn for a second seasonal display. Hardy and compact, it is a reliable and ornamental feature tree.
Season: Deep pink blossom in early spring; green foliage in summer; orange-red autumn colours; deciduous in winter
Care: Plant in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil. Low maintenance and hardy, requiring minimal pruning beyond removing damaged or crossing branches.
Unique Selling Points: Very early flowering, compact form, masses of pink blossoms, excellent autumn colour, ideal for small gardens.
History: A hybrid cherry bred in the UK by Captain Collingwood Ingram, renowned for his work with ornamental cherries.
Mature Size (after 10 years): Approx. 3–4 m height × 3–4 m spread
