Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’ Tree – Purple-Leaved Flowering Plum

Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’ is a striking ornamental plum, widely admired for its deep purple-black foliage and early spring blossom. In March and April, masses of pale pink to white flowers appear before the leaves, creating a spectacular display. The foliage remains a rich dark purple through summer, before turning reddish tones in autumn. Compact and elegant, it makes a superb specimen tree or feature in mixed borders.

Season: Pale pink blossom in early spring; purple-black summer foliage; reddish autumn leaves; deciduous in winter

Care: Thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Requires little pruning, except to remove crossing branches. Tolerates urban conditions well.

Unique Selling Points: Early flowering, dramatic purple foliage, ornamental all year, compact size suitable for small gardens.

History: A popular ornamental plum cultivar, introduced from Europe in the early 20th century and widely planted for its foliage colour.

Mature Size (after 10 years): Approx. 4–5 m height × 3–4 m spread
