Bring a literal glow to your garden during the coldest months with Cornus sanguinea 'Midwinter Fire'. This spectacular deciduous Dogwood is a must-have for winter interest, famous for its striking stems that transition from bright yellow at the base to fiery orange and brilliant red at the tips. When the leaves fall in autumn, these stems stand out like a bonfire against the winter landscape, especially when frosted or dusted with snow.
Beyond its winter display, 'Midwinter Fire' offers year-round beauty. In spring and summer, it features lush green foliage and small clusters of white flowers that are highly attractive to pollinators. In autumn, the leaves turn wonderful shades of golden-orange before falling to reveal the architectural "fire" of the branches. Arriving in a 3L pot, this established shrub is perfect for mass planting, mixed borders, or as a vibrant focal point in a large container.
Care Instructions:
For the most intense stem colour, plant your Cornus in a position of full sun or partial shade. It is an incredibly adaptable shrub that thrives in most soil types and is particularly useful for damp or boggy areas where other plants might struggle. To maintain the vibrant "fire" effect, it is essential to hard-prune the plant back to about 10–15cm from the ground every year in late March (a process known as coppicing). This encourages the growth of fresh new stems, which carry the brightest colours. After pruning, apply a generous mulch of well-rotted manure or compost around the base to fuel the new growth.
