True to its name, Hosta Blue Mammoth is a giant of the shade garden. This spectacular herbaceous perennial forms a massive, architectural mound of huge, puckered, blue-grey leaves that can reach impressive proportions. The foliage is finished with a heavy, waxy coating that gives it its distinct powder-blue hue. In mid-summer, tall stems emerge bearing clusters of near-white, bell-shaped flowers, providing a delicate contrast to the robust, bold foliage below.
Key Features:
-
Giant Blue Foliage: Features some of the largest leaves of any Hosta variety, with a stunning, waxy blue-grey finish.
-
Slug Resistant Texture: The thick, heavily textured leaves are much more resistant to slug and snail damage than thinner-leaved varieties.
-
Architectural Presence: A vigorous grower that creates an instant focal point and fills large, shady gaps with ease.
-
Shade Specialist: Thrives in low-light areas, making it perfect for underplanting trees or brightening north-facing walls.
-
Elegant Summer Blooms: Tall flower spikes attract bees and provide a gentle late-summer highlight.
Care Instructions:
Hosta Blue Mammoth prefers a spot in partial to full shade; the blue color is best maintained when the plant is kept out of direct afternoon sun, which can "melt" the waxy blue coating. It thrives in fertile, moist, well-drained soil. It is a thirsty plant, so ensure it is watered regularly, especially during dry periods. Apply a generous mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure in the spring to help retain moisture. While more resistant to pests than other Hostas, it is still beneficial to apply slug deterrents as the new shoots emerge in spring.
