Transform your winter garden into a masterpiece with Cornus alba Sibirica, commonly known as the Siberian Dogwood. This deciduous shrub is a true horticultural multi-tasker, but its star performance begins when the leaves drop. As winter approaches, the stems turn an incredibly intense, bright coral-red, creating a "winter fire" effect that looks spectacular against frost or snow. Throughout the spring and summer, it provides a lush backdrop of pointed green leaves and small clusters of creamy-white flowers, followed by white berries with a blue tint in autumn.
Key Features:
-
Intense Red Winter Stems: Renowned for having some of the brightest red bark of any Dogwood variety.
-
Multi-Season Interest: Offers white spring flowers, lush summer foliage, and vibrant reddish-purple autumn colors.
-
Wildlife Friendly: The spring flowers attract pollinators, while the autumn berries provide food for birds.
-
Tough & Resilient: Thrives in a variety of conditions, including damp or heavy soils where other shrubs might struggle.
-
Fast Growing: Quickly establishes itself to provide a dense, colorful screen or focal point.
Care Instructions:
Cornus alba Sibirica is exceptionally easy to grow and performs best in full sun or partial shade, though full sun is essential for the brightest winter stem color. It is a moisture-loving shrub and thrives in damp, well-drained soil. Pruning is key: To maintain the vibrant red stems, the plant should be "coppiced" every year or two. In late winter or early spring (before the buds open), cut all the stems back to within 5–10 cm of the ground. This encourages the growth of fresh new stems, which hold the most intense red color. Apply a generous mulch of well-rotted manure or compost after pruning to fuel this rapid new growth.
