Illuminating even the darkest corners of the garden, Aucuba japonica ‘Crotonifolia’ is a robust and dependable evergreen shrub. It is highly prized for its large, leathery, glossy green leaves that are heavily speckled with vibrant gold, creating a "sun-dappled" effect year-round. This "Spotted Laurel" is one of the few plants that truly thrives in deep, dry shade, making it an invaluable choice for planting under large trees, beside north-facing walls, or as a dense, colourful screen.

Key Features:

  • Striking Variegated Foliage: Large, glossy leaves splashed with bright yellow-gold provide instant light and colour to shaded areas.

  • Shade Specialist: Exceptionally tolerant of deep shade and dry soil where other plants often struggle to grow.

  • Evergreen Structure: Maintains its lush, dense habit throughout the year, providing excellent screening and privacy.

  • Incredibly Tough: Highly resilient against air pollution, salt spray, and harsh winds, making it perfect for both urban and coastal gardens.

  • Winter Berries: Female plants may produce large, bright red berries in autumn and winter if a male pollinator is nearby.

Care & Usage Instructions:
Aucuba ‘Crotonifolia’ is one of the easiest shrubs to maintain. While it will grow in partial shade, it performs best in full shade; direct midday sun can occasionally scorch the variegated leaves. It is not fussy about soil type, provided it is well-drained. Once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant. To maintain its shape or use as a hedge, prune in mid-spring by cutting back individual stems to a leaf bud; avoid using shears as this can tear the large leaves. Apply a mulch of compost or well-rotted manure annually in spring to support healthy growth.
