Sow into trays or cells of a well drained seed compost, "Just cover" the seeds with a sprinkling of compost or vermiculite as they need light to germinate. They will germinate in approximately 7-14 days at 21°C (70°F)
When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Handle the plants with care and avoid disturbing the roots as much as possible. Gradually hardened off for 10-14 days before transplanting into the flowering site in mid May. Light spring frosts will not harm the plants.
At the time of transplant, pinch the tips of the plants to promote bushiness and plant 15-20cm (6-10") apart.

The seed may also be direct sown once frosts have passed, directly where they are to flower, but in this case flowering will start later.
Sow thinly on the surface of well-cultivated soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. Water regularly. When large enough to handle, thin out the seedlings to 15-20cm (6-10") apart.
