March Subscription Box: Bare Root Perennials Guide

March marks the start of the growing season, and we couldn’t be more excited to introduce this month’s Rose Press Gardens subscription box. Inside, you’ll find five carefully selected bare root perennials chosen for their structure, colour, and long-lasting beauty in the garden.

This month’s collection includes:
Achillea ‘Lilac Beauty’, Delphinium ‘Magic Fountain Sky Blue’, Peonia ‘Nymphaea Lactiflora’, Salvia ‘Nemorosa Amethyst’, and Eryngium ‘Blue Star’—a beautiful mix designed to bring texture, height, and soft, complementary tones to your space.

Getting Started: Planting Your Bare Roots

Bare root perennials are a wonderful, cost-effective way to establish strong, healthy plants.

When your plants arrive, begin by checking each root. If they feel dry, soak them in a bucket of water for a couple of hours before planting. If they already feel firm and hydrated, you can plant them straight away.

When planting, look for any visible shoots or buds—these should always sit above the soil, with the roots below. This ensures your plant grows in the correct direction.

Use a good quality multi-purpose compost and plant into pots or directly into the ground, allowing enough space for roots to spread. Once planted, water thoroughly to help settle the soil and eliminate air pockets.

Label each plant clearly, especially while they are still establishing.

Keep your newly planted bare roots in a greenhouse or on a bright windowsill until the risk of frost has passed, before gradually moving them outside.

Care Guide: Your March Perennials

Achillea ‘Lilac Beauty’

A soft, romantic perennial with clusters of lilac-pink flowers and feathery foliage. Achillea thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it perfect for borders or cottage-style planting. It’s drought tolerant once established and loved by pollinators. Deadhead to encourage repeat flowering.

Delphinium ‘Magic Fountain Sky Blue’

Known for its striking vertical spikes of sky-blue blooms, this compact delphinium adds height and elegance to any garden. Plant in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or light shade. Shelter from strong winds and support stems if needed. Keep well-watered, especially during dry spells.

Peonia ‘Nymphaea Lactiflora’

A timeless favourite, this peony produces large, soft blush-pink blooms with a delicate fragrance. Plant in a sunny or lightly shaded spot with rich, well-drained soil. Ensure the crown is planted just below the soil surface. Peonies dislike disturbance, so choose a spot where they can remain undisturbed for years to come.

Salvia ‘Nemorosa Amethyst’

A reliable, long-flowering perennial with deep violet-purple spikes that attract bees and butterflies. Best planted in full sun with well-drained soil. Trim back after the first flush of flowers to encourage a second bloom later in the season.

Eryngium ‘Blue Star’

With its striking, architectural steel-blue flowers, eryngium adds texture and contrast to any planting scheme. It thrives in full sun and well-drained, even poor soil. Once established, it’s incredibly low maintenance and drought tolerant—perfect for modern or coastal-style gardens.

Designing Your Garden

This month’s selection has been thoughtfully curated to work beautifully together. The soft lilacs and blues create a calming palette, while varying heights—from low-growing salvia to tall delphiniums—add depth and interest.

Whether planted in borders, raised beds, or containers, these hardy perennials will return year after year, growing stronger with time and becoming key features in your garden.

Final Thoughts

With just a little care and attention now, your Monthly subscription box will reward you with months—if not years—of beautiful blooms.

We love seeing how you style your gardens, so don’t forget to share your progress with us.

Happy planting 🌸
